Vietjet expands fleet capacity amid increasing travel demands for the Lunar New Year holidays

Kuala Lumpur, 2 February 2024 – In light of the increased travel demand during the Lunar New Year celebration, Vietjet has acquired two additional aircraft under wet-leased arrangement. This recent expansion brings the airline’s wet-lease fleet to six, adding on to its existing fleet of 105 aircraft operating across 125 routes within Vietnam and internationally.

Vietjet has recently expanded its services with the introduction of nearly 750 flights, providing 154,800 extra seats to meet rising demand during the peak travel period in Vietnam and the region. The additional flights will primarily enhance the capacity for services departing from Vietnam’s largest city of Ho Chi Minh. This is especially significant as a majority of travellers choose this departure point for their journey back to their hometowns in the Northern and Central provinces, such as Hanoi, Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen), Chu Lai (Quang Nam), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh), Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh), Da Nang, Hue, Vinh (Nghe An), Thanh Hoa, and Hai Phong, among others.

The enhanced flight capacity will cater to the growing travel demand to and from Vietnam’s top tourist destinations, including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phu Quoc, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Da Lat and beyond. Additionally, the surge in international travel is notable during this period, as individuals capitalise on their extended holidays in Vietnam, Malaysia, China, South Korea, and Singapore for spring travels.

Over the past two months, Vietjet has actively expanded its international flight network, introducing destinations such as Shanghai, Vientiane, Siem Reap (Cambodia), Busan (South Korea), Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide (Australia). On the first day of the Lunar New Year (February 10, 2024), Vietjet will also launch a direct service linking Ho Chi Minh City with Chengdu in China. These new destinations offer a variety of options for spring travels, catering to Malaysians, Vietnamese, and other international tourists.

In 2023, Vietjet operated 133,000 flights with 25.3 million passengers onboard (excluding Vietjet Thailand) – a surge of 183% YoY, of whom more than 7.6 million were on international flights. The airline last year also expanded its flight network with 33 new international and domestic routes, bringing the overall count to 125, comprising 80 international and 45 domestic routes.
